Just like people, different cats have different hydration needs. Your catâs water intake depends on their size, diet, activity level, and overall health â along with the weather, humidity, and several other factors. In general, cats should consume about 3.5â4.5 ounces of water per 5 pounds of body weight per day. Of course, it is possible to have too much of a good thing ⊠even water. If your cat is drinking more than 7.5 ounces of water per 5 pounds of body weight per day, they could be showing signs of a health condition such as diabetes, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, or other problems. If you think your cat is drinking too much water, itâs time for a visit to your vet.

an overweight, 6-year-old shorthair had been drinking a lot more water than usual. On top of his increased thirst, he was also âpeeing up a stormâ (as his owner said). Though Oliver seemed to be otherwise OK, his owner thankfully brought him in for a checkup. Catching Oliverâs diabetes early meant he not only avoided a more serious medical emergency (diabetic ketoacidosis), it also meant that his diet change and insulin treatment could be started sooner. Because of this, Oliverâs diabetes went into remission after just five months.
