If you value your cat’s comfort and health (and your carpets!), your cat should always have quick and easy access to their litter box. But since their litter box might not always be clean, available, or easy to get to — and since cats can develop bad associations with a litter box, like if they get startled while using it or have a painful pee or poop in it — it’s always a good idea to have more than one box, even in single-cat households. So, what’s the right number of boxes? Follow the “cats + 1 rule” — meaning you should have one litter box for every cat plus one extra. This will make everybody happier … including you.
