It’s a known fact … cats love snuggling and sleeping in dark, enclosed spaces. And, if it’s a little warm, all the better! So, you can imagine how a recently used clothes dryer can be enticing for a cat in search of a place to hunker down. Unfortunately, many cats have suffered burns — or even died — after jumping, unnoticed, into the dryer, only to have it closed up and turned on with them still inside. The same goes for washing machines, too. For your cat’s safety, and your peace of mind, keep your washer and dryer doors closed — and always take a close look inside before using them.

a 3-year-old shorthair, is lucky to be alive after his tumble in a clothes dryer. He had snuggled into the warm, not-quite-dry-enough-yet clothes when mom left the dryer door open as she ran to grab her ringing phone in the other room. Upon return, and distracted by her call, she closed and restarted the dryer. Bandit’s meows went unheard, and it wasn’t until 20 minutes later, when mom returned to check on the clothes, that she realized what had happened. Bandit was rushed to the vet, dazed and burnt. Thankfully, he survived and now keeps well away from the laundry room. Mom doesn’t take any chances though … she now triple checks before closing the washer and dryer doors!
