In fact, many times, wellness visits aren’t about “shots” at all. These visits are important for all cats, even indoor-only cats. Checking in with what’s changed or been happening over the past 6–12 months, the examination, and the ensuing discussion about any concerns is invaluable to the health, wellness, and safety of your cat. Cats are masters at hiding pain and disease. Fortunately, we vets are masters at detecting the signs to uncover and prevent problems.
owners thought that she was “the picture of health” when they brought their 6-year-old Persian in for her yearly wellness checkup. But on her vet’s examination it was noted that some of the blood vessels at the back of Precious’s eyes were distended and abnormal. Her vet checked her blood pressure, which was abnormally elevated, too. Blood tests were run and it was discovered that Precious had an extremely high red blood cell count, a condition called polycythemia (a rare but dangerous and debilitating condition). Thankfully, with treatment and monitoring, Precious and her people got many more happy years together.
