Pheromones: The secret language of animals

Animals do a lot of communicating through pheromones — chemical compounds that send "scent messages" to members of their own species. For example, many moms (including cat moms, called "queens") release pheromones to help soothe their babies as they nurse. Cats of all ages also release pheromones from their paws when they scratch, and from their cheeks when they rub their face against objects or people in your home. This is how they mark their territory as "theirs" and safe, which helps to give them comfort. Pheromone collars, sprays, and plug-in diffusers can work in a similar way to help calm and comfort your kitty. Try using them around your home to help treat — or even prevent — stress and anxiety in your cat.
