Senior Dog Comfort & Care

Eye see ya, sorta!

Vision loss often occurs gradually as dogs age. The good news is that dogs adapt well and can maneuver using their other senses, even their whiskers.

You might notice a cloudiness or blueish haze in their eyes. This could be Lenticular (Nuclear) Sclerosis — a hardening of the lens that won’t lead to blindness but can affect depth perception. It could also be cataracts, which can lead to total blindness, but surgery can improve this condition. Other things can cause blindness, like glaucoma or high blood pressure. If your dog suddenly becomes blind, you should seek veterinary care immediately. See Tip #99 for how to set up furniture and your dog’s resources (bed, bowls, etc.) to make it easier for them.
