Just as Goldilocks needed a bed that was “just right,” so does your senior dog. The bed needs to be made of thick, high-quality material, such as memory foam — at least two inches deep. If you can feel the floor when you push down on the bed, it will be uncomfortable for your dog. It needs to be soft enough to cushion sore joints and protruding bones but firm enough that they don’t sink into it or struggle to get out of bed.
Since many seniors have potty accidents and tend to get too warm when sleeping (which interrupts sleep), have a bed cover that is waterproof or water-resistant, easily washable, and made of cooling material (cotton or bamboo are ideal).
Place beds in multiple locations throughout your home in low-traffic and quiet areas, with water bowls nearby. Keeping a bed near the door for quick potty trips outside can also be helpful.
Some senior dogs need more security so they do not feel like they’re out in the open. Having the ideal bed in a pen or oversized crate may be just what they need. Bolsters or pillows for their head to rest on is something many senior dogs like, too.
