Calming supplements & medications

Your dog’s “golden years” should be calm and peaceful. As your dog ages, changes in their sight and hearing, as well as medical issues, can cause increased anxiety and stress. Therefore, it is important to recognize signals that they are stressed and anxious. Such indicators include pacing, panting, jumping or flinching, vocalizing, avoiding regular activities, or feeling stressed when left alone.

To help them, you want to avoid or minimize any known stressors, provide them with mental stimulation, and use calming supplements that contain L-tryptophan, alpha-casozepine. L-theanine, chamomile, valerian, magnolia officinalis, Phellodendron amuresnse, or pheromones. Probiotics have also been shown to reduce anxiety in dogs as well. If your dog isn’t responding to supplements alone, consult your veterinarian sooner rather than later about what medications may be beneficial.
