Senior Dog Comfort & Care

For dogs, time really does fly by

As we age, it seems like time goes by faster. For dogs, it’s true. Their bodies age more quickly because of their higher metabolism. Unfortunately, this means that disease development can happen quickly. This is why older dogs need veterinary exams more often. For example, if 1 dog year equals 7 human years (which isn’t exactly accurate, but close enough for this example), then waiting a year between doctor’s visits is 7 years!

For generally healthy seniors, wellness visits are recommended every 6 months, which is still 3 to 4 “dog years!” A lot can happen in 3 years! For dogs with health issues, visits every 3 to 4 months may be recommended to ensure that their medical issue isn’t worsening, that medications are working correctly, and that no additional health issues are emerging.

Veterinarians are medical detectives; their physical exams and diagnostic tests will uncover issues well before your dog will “tell” you. It’s also your chance to tell them what you’ve been noticing.

The earlier a condition is diagnosed; the sooner treatment can be started. This means less discomfort for your dog, and it could potentially save or extend their life.
