Dealing with grief

The loss of a dog is a profound and deeply personal experience that varies from one person to another. Allow yourself to grieve in your own way and time. For some, commemorating their dog’s life through a tribute, such as planting a tree or sponsoring a plaque or brick in their dog’s name at a local shelter, can provide comfort and a means to cherish the memories shared. If you have other pets, you may notice that they are grieving the loss of their family member as well. Some may act normally, while others take time to return to normal.

Seeking support from friends, family, or pet loss support groups can offer solace, as many understand the magnitude of loss. It’s okay to feel a range of emotions and to take the time you need. Comfort your other pets as they need, but don’t try to rush anything. With time, reflecting on the joy and companionship your dog brought to your life can become a source of comfort to help ease the pain of their absence.
