As your dog ages, they may not be able to hold it as long as they used to and will require more frequent potty breaks. Add more trips throughout the day to their potty spot (whether outside or an indoor potty pad) as if you were back in the days of puppy potty training. Try to give your dog a potty break at least every 3 to 4 hours during the day and set up an indoor potty spot for them to use while you’re away from home.
Praise them and give them a treat when they go in the right spot. And if they do have a potty accident, don’t scold them. Simply clean up the mess using an enzymatic cleaner to remove any scents that could entice them to go there again. Keeping a potty log for a few days can help you determine any patterns in accidents and what times you should give your dog a preemptive potty break.
