When we think about our dog’s golden years, it seldom crosses our minds that it will involve “leaking poo” — when your dog loses their ability to control their bowel movements. It can occur without them even being aware it is happening. Some diseases that result in fecal incontinence include inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, or any disease that affects the intestines. In other situations, they are aware it is happening but can’t control it. This happens because the anal sphincter is unable to remain closed, meaning feces leaks out. Issues with the sphincter occur when there is a mass or wound in that area, or there is damage to the nerves from surgery or Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). It won't feel like a big deal once you learn to embrace and adjust to the situation.
