How to know when it is time to say goodbye?

Making the decision to say goodbye to your beloved friend is one of the most difficult decisions you will ever have to make. Protecting your pet’s dignity and preventing prolonged suffering is truly a gift of love. Only you and your family truly know your dog and can assess whether they have a true quality of life. But even knowing that, we can often convince ourselves they are just having a bad day. By keeping a daily journal, you can monitor and remember how each day was. When there are obviously more bad than good days, it is time to truly consider what is best for your dog. Some strong indicators that euthanasia should be considered are when there is continuous and incurable weight loss, vomiting, pain, distress, and immobility. Difficulty breathing, whether constant or only when resting, is very unpleasant for pets and should also be an indicator. When the time is really at hand, your heart will tell you. If you are ever struggling and unsure of what to do, speak to your veterinarian for guidance, and don’t ever be hard on yourself for deciding to finally say goodbye.
