Too thin doesn’t win

Being lean is beneficial, but you don’t want your dog to be too skinny. As some dogs age, they lose weight due to a decrease in appetite, digestion issues, or medical issues.

A major issue for senior dogs is the loss of muscle mass since aging has a negative effect on protein turnover. An inadequate amount of protein causes weight and muscle loss, resulting in your senior becoming too skinny.

Your senior may be too skinny if you can easily see their ribs, their backbone protruding, or the outline of their pelvic bones. If you notice any of these or are concerned about your dog’s weight, ask your veterinarian what their ideal weight is and what ways you can help them, such as through diet and supplements. See Tip #28 for more about dietary protein needs.
