Some changes in behavior are expected as a dog transitions into seniorhood. But sudden or extreme changes of behavior are a red flag! If your previously mellow dog is acting exceedingly anxious or a usually happy-go-lucky dog is exhibiting aggressive behaviors, it could be a sign of pain, injury, or illness. For example, a dog suffering from hip pain may nip at someone who reaches to pet them in that area. Or a dog losing their hearing may snap at someone who startles them out of sleep.
If your dog starts acting differently out of the blue, you’ll want to schedule an examination with your veterinarian to rule out potential medical reasons for this change. Often, once a medical issue has been addressed, behavioral changes diminish or resolve. Whether your veterinarian gives your dog the all-clear or they are facing a chronic illness, you’ll want to connect with a certified dog trainer or behavior consultant to learn how to address these behavior changes and help your dog feel better.
