As humans, we often prefer company while we eat. Dogs, however, can get testy about eating with other dogs nearby, leading to resource guarding issues. This can get worse with age.
Senior dogs often eat more slowly than they used to (possibly due to dental issues, Chapter 6). This slower pace makes them more susceptible to food thieves swooping in and stealing their food. If this is happening without you knowing it, your senior may end up suffering from a lack of calories and nutrients.
Some senior dogs also get grumpy as they age due to pain or dementia. Therefore, they often prefer not to be bothered while they are eating. If other pets disturb them during a meal, it could result in a fight. It’s best to feed dogs in separate areas and make sure they aren’t bothering each other during mealtimes.
