One of the most important things to have in your training toolbox is a way to tell your dog they got it right. This makes training go faster, and the whole process is much clearer for your dog.
Use a short and upbeat word to precisely mark the behavior your dog is getting the treat for. This is called a marker word (if you’re familiar with clicker training, the click is the marker). The most popular marker word is “Yes!”
For example, you ask your dog to sit. You say “Yes!” right as their rear hits the ground and then immediately give them a treat. The marker word ALWAYS predicts a treat, so don’t forget!
You can start using a marker word right away with your dog. Anytime they do something you like and want to see more of, say yes and give them a treat. It’s that easy! You’ll be amazed how quickly they start offering certain behaviors to get you to say yes.
