Senior Dog Comfort & Care

Oh, my aching belly

What once was an enjoyable treat or meal for your senior dog may no longer be. Many senior dogs develop a sensitive stomach as they age due to natural changes in how their body digest foods. For different reasons, their stomach and intestines are not able to break down food as they once did. Plus, seniors aren’t able to absorb nutrients as efficiently as they used to. Combine this with their decreased desire to eat, and your dog will begin to lose weight.

Signs of a sensitive system include intermittent loose stools or diarrhea, gas, nausea, excessive drooling, and vomiting. Since these can be symptoms of other illnesses in senior dogs, it is critical to have them evaluated by a veterinarian. If it’s just a sensitive gastrointestinal system, your veterinarian can recommend diets, treats, and supplements that will help soothe their discomfort and aid in digestion.
