Fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and nasty intestinal bugs don’t care if their victim is a perky pup or a special senior. Did you know that a study revealed that 1 out of every 5 dogs that go to the dog park has intestinal parasites? Even if your senior is more of a homebody in their “retirement years,” these pesky pests can find a way onto and into them. And because a senior’s immune system isn’t as strong, these pests can wreak havoc. That is why keeping them on preventative medications all year long is important.
Many oral and some topical preventatives protect against all parasites: fleas, ticks, heartworm, and intestinal. These medications, while worth the investment, can be expensive. One way to minimize the cost is to help your dog lose weight if they are chunky. For example, moving from a 50lb dog dose to a 40lb dose could save you money. And, of course, a trimmer pup is healthier.
