Rearranger danger!

Changing up your dog’s home environment can make it hard for them to navigate, especially if they are going blind. When they’ve been used to things being in certain places, suddenly moving things around can be confusing and quite stressful. Having predictable surroundings and routines helps your dog stay calm.

Bumping into things, avoiding stairs, or being anxious in new places could be signs they’re losing their sight. You can do things to make life easier:

  • Create clear routes to their bed, bowls, and door; keep all paths wide with no obstacles. Don’t move furniture around.
  • “Bumper-style” collars can be worn to avoid running into things.
  • Use gates to block off dangerous areas, like staircases.
  • Have a large tag on your dog’s harness that states your dog is blind, which may prevent people from approaching your dog abruptly.
