Senior Dog Comfort & Care

Once, twice, three times a day

Let’s be honest: who likes to eat JUST once a day? No one! Including your senior dog. It’s best to feed your dog at least twice per day, as it can aid in digestion, help avoid overeating (improve weight management), and help prevent their stomach from becoming hyperacidic, which can result in nausea. Additionally, some research has indicated one single big meal can increase the risk of gastric dilatation-volvulus (a.k.a. GDV, bloat).

Some senior dogs do better with small portions more frequently, so consider adding a third meal at lunch. These more frequent mealtimes are easier on their digestive system, weaker jaws and smaller appetites.

Many senior dogs need to take their medications with food. So, feeding on a schedule helps ensure your dog will not get meds on an empty stomach. Also, if your senior gave you sad eyes all day to get extra treats, you can cut back on the amount of their last meal of the day to reduce their calorie load. A regular eating schedule will also help you identify changes in eating habits that can signal medical issues.
