Senior Dog Comfort & Care

It’s bedtime somewhere

Beauty rest and quality sleep are essential for everyone, including dogs. Our faithful senior companions have earned their rest and need to be allowed to relax in peace. Some dogs attempt to be in the Guinness Book of World Records by sleeping 18 to 20 hours a day. Others will sleep about 14 to 15 hours per day. However, if you notice increased sluggishness or inactivity, that isn’t a good sign, so have that checked out. These changes can be indicators of an illness.

Activity monitors in collar form or small trackers you add to your dog’s existing collar or harness can monitor your dog’s sleep, among other things. You’ll be able to detect if or when there are any abnormalities to their sleep patterns. Inactivity can also indicate pain (Tip #41). And while adequate rest is essential, so is exercise (Tip #14). Be sure to keep them moving, as it can improve the quality of their sleep.
