Vision loss often occurs gradually as cats age. The good news is that most adapt well and can maneuver using their other senses, even their whiskers. But be aware that a cat with diminished sight may be a bit more nervous or on alert because of the increased sense of vulnerability.
You might notice a blueish transparent haze in their eye that is most obvious when their eyes are dilated. This could be lenticular (nuclear) sclerosis — a hardening of the lens that won’t lead to blindness but can affect their depth perception. It could also be cataracts, which can lead to total blindness. Surgery can often improve this condition. Glaucoma or high blood pressure can cause blindness as well.
If you notice sudden changes in your cat’s vision, seek veterinary care immediately. You may observe a lack of reaction to things moving near them, stumbling or missing the landing when they jump, disinterest in watching toys move, and other changes in their normal behavior.
See Chapter 11 for information on how to help your cat navigate and feel more secure in their space.
