Senior Cat Comfort & Care

New companion – friend or foe?

Bringing a new cat (or dog) into a home with a senior cat can be appealing and scary. On the one hand, your senior might enjoy the companionship. You may feel that saying goodbye to your senior when the time comes will be easier with another furball for support.

On the other hand, cat or dog introductions can be really challenging and time-consuming. You can't guarantee the outcome. They may end up best friends, peacefully co-existing, or fighting and making things harder for your senior and you.

So, how do you know if now's the time?

  • Don't decide based on the idea that this will be a best buddy for your senior. You can't predict how they'll get along.
  • Do you have space for a slow intro? If they don't get along, could you keep them separate to limit your senior's stress?
  • Depending on your senior's health status, they could need more of your time with supportive care. Will a new pet fit into your care schedule?
  • A senior cat's journey can cause emotional stress for you. Would a new pet offer you support or wear you thin?

These are just some of the considerations to think through.
