You want your cat's golden years to be calm and peaceful. In addition to play, enrichment, environmental adjustments, and working to address specific stress triggers, calming supplements can also be helpful.
Your veterinarian can offer suggestions and ensure they won't interact with prescription medications. Use calming supplements that contain L-tryptophan, alpha-casozepine (hydrolyzed milk protein), L-theanine, vitamin B, chamomile, valerian, magnolia officinalis, Phellodendron amuresnse, dried whey protein concentrate, silver vine, or pheromones. You may have to try different supplements to find one your cat will respond to.
Probiotics have also been shown to reduce anxiety in cats.
If your cat isn't responding to supplements alone, consult your veterinarian about whether medication may be beneficial. You're not looking to change your cat's personality or knock them out. You just want to take the edge off so they can let their guard down and relax a bit more.
