Improving relationships that have soured

It’s not uncommon for relationships between cats to change, especially if one is getting older, slowing down, and maybe dealing with medical issues while the other is active and ready to play. But there are things you can do to help.

Positive shared experiences. Bring your cats together a couple of times a day for something positive — treats, pets, mellow play, catnip, etc. Show them that when they’re near each other, good things happen.

Reward positive and neutral interactions. If they boop noses or have a bonding moment, reward it. If they completely ignore each other and don’t have a negative reaction, that’s great too! Reward it.

Limit negative interactions. Do your best to calmly and quickly stop fights or redirect their attention to something positive if they start to get tense with each other.

Alone-time helps.
