Senior Cat Comfort & Care

Constipation in senior cats happens for lots of reasons, most often dehydration and low-fiber diets. There are simple things you can do to help. And, of course, your veterinarian can recommend medical treatment if needed.

Your cat may not be drinking enough water due to things like pain, stress, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, or immobility. Cats also naturally have a low thirst drive since their ancestors lived in the desert.

Dehydration is more likely for cats on dry food diets.

Here are a few ways to increase your cat's water intake:

  • Try a wet food diet
  • Add water to dry and wet food.
  • Try warm water (helpful for kitties with dental discomfort)
  • Look for cat-specific broths and liquid toppers to go on food or in water
  • Try a fountain

Constipation can be caused by other things, like weight, inactivity, and medical issues. Even some medications can cause a backup.

  • Try a fiber supplement
  • Give pre and probiotics
  • Encourage appropriate activity
  • Talk to your veterinarian
