Time flies for us — even faster for our cats. A cat 7 to 10 years old is equivalent to your mid-40s to 50s. A cat at 14 is you at about 70! They age quickly, and disease development can happen quickly, too. This is why older cats need veterinary exams more often. Based on a general understanding of how cats’ bodies age (1 cat year loosely equals about 5 human years), waiting a year between vet visits is equal to about 5 years without a follow-up appointment! For senior kitties, that’s a long time.
For healthy seniors, wellness visits are recommended every 6 months, which is still 2 to 3 cat years! For cats with health issues, visits every 3 to 4 months may be recommended to ensure their condition isn’t worsening, medications are working well, and no additional health issues are emerging.
Veterinarians are medical detectives. Their physical exam and diagnostic tests, along with your monitoring for subtle changes in your cat’s normal behavior, will uncover issues early.
The earlier the diagnosis, the sooner treatment can be started. This means less discomfort for your cat and potentially saving or extending their life.
