Am I too skinny?

A lean, healthy senior cat is great. But you don’t want them underweight. As some cats age, they gradually lose weight due to a decrease in appetite, digestion issues, or medical issues.

Muscle mass is another consideration. Aging has a negative effect on protein turnover, making it hard for some seniors to maintain muscle. This causes them to lose weight and eventually get too skinny for their optimal health.

Your senior may be too skinny if you can easily see their ribs, the backbone is protruding, or you can see the outline of their pelvic bones.

If you’re concerned, ask your veterinarian what their ideal weight is and how you can help them achieve and maintain it.
