Arthritis

Did you know that about 45% of all cats have arthritis, and the estimate increases to 90% for cats over 10? Arthritis means inflammation of the joints. It’s a slow and progressive disease. Inflammation anywhere in the body can cause arthritis in the joints. One of the most significant causes of inflammation is obesity (sadly, another common problem for senior cats).

Helping to prevent and control inflammation in your cat's body is vital.

  • Maintain your cat at a healthy weight
  • Feed a commercially produced, high-quality, well-balanced diet from a reputable company
  • Provide regular exercise (check out Chapter 9 on play for all levels of mobility)
  • Give omega-3 fatty acids, joint supplements, and probiotics
  • Use parasite prevention to stop inflammation from parasitic infections
  • Schedule routine wellness exams

There are also treatments available specifically for arthritis that target pain and reduce the impact on your cat’s life. Your vet can come up with a treatment plan.
