Ramp it up

It’s easy to imagine the joy of being a cat and jumping five feet into the air to land on your favorite cat tree or piece of furniture. It’s also easy to see how stressful it must be to lose that ability. Don’t worry! You can help your senior cat get up off the floor.

Ramps and stairs are great options to access couches, beds, windows, and more.

Consider your cat’s specific needs when looking for the right ramp or stairs.

  • Can your cat still hop a little with the back legs, making stairs an option? Or is a ramp better so there’s less legwork needed?
  • Can they walk straight from the stairs/ramp onto the piece of furniture, or do they need a flat landing at the top to change direction?
  • Is the incline gradual enough for easy balancing and no leg fatigue?
  • Do they need guard rails so they can’t step off the edge?
  • Is it wide enough and non-slip so they can walk naturally?
  • Will they be able to see it well, especially at night? (Cats see blue most clearly. Adding a blue non-slip surface and a nightlight can help.)
