Senior Cat Comfort & Care

P(oops) I did it again!

Your cat's golden years may involve leaking poo — when your cat loses the ability to control their bowel movements. Often, they don’t even know it’s happening. This is where patience and understanding come in — along with some really good unscented, sensitive skin cat cleaning wipes.

Some diseases that can cause fecal incontinence include inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, diseases of the intestines, spinal cord injury, or cognitive dysfunction.

It's also possible your cat will know it's happening but can't control it. This happens because the anal sphincter is unable to remain closed, meaning feces leaks out. Issues with the sphincter occur when there is a mass or wound in that area or damage to the nerves that control it.

It's understandably icky at first. But once you've gotten used to it and created a routine that allows for easy cleanup of your cat and home, it's not such a big deal.

As with incontinence, pee pads and waterproof blankets make cleanup easier. Place them where your cat tends to rest. Instead of regular baths, cat cleansing wipes or a warm, damp paper towel can help with kitty cleanup.
