Many senior cats develop a sensitive stomach as they age. Their stomach and intestines can’t break down food as they once did due to changes in enzyme activity within the digestive tract. They’re also unable to absorb nutrients as efficiently.
Signs of a sensitive system include intermittent loose stools or diarrhea, gas, nausea, vomiting, and loss of energy. You may also notice your cat excited to eat a new food once or twice and then avoid the food, only to get excited when you switch to a new food, and then the same avoidance. Because they feel bad when they eat one thing, they want to try something else but have the same result — the vicious cycle continues.
Since these can be symptoms of illness, it’s critical to have your cat evaluated by a veterinarian. If they’re diagnosed with a sensitive system, your veterinarian can recommend diets, treats, and supplements that will help soothe their discomfort and aid in digestion.
