Senior Cat Comfort & Care

Skin health

As cats age, their skin thins and loses elasticity. This delicate skin can tear more easily, which is problematic because seniors also have a higher risk of infection.

Many cats are sensitive to touch generally, but you may notice more sensitivity at this age because thinning skin provides less of a sensory barrier.

Be very gentle with grooming tools and handling, and use soft-bristle brushes.

See your veterinarian to avoid an infection if you tear or cut your cat’s skin.

The condition of your cat’s skin often indicates how they feel on the inside. Some skin changes are a normal part of aging, but others are due to environmental or medical conditions.

Dry, flaky skin can be an issue as skin glands produce less oil. Fish oil supplements, regular brushing, using a humidifier, and periodically bathing with a soap-free, moisturizing pet shampoo and leave-in conditioner can help with dry skin.
