Senior Cat Comfort & Care

I don’t want to be alone

If your senior kitty is dealing with cognitive issues (Tip #67) or changes in their hearing or vision, you may notice they seem clingier or get vocal when you're not around.

This is a natural response. They're feeling less secure and a bit anxious.

You can help by thinking about what issues they're dealing with and offering support. Using a camera to monitor them when you’re not in the room can help you identify some of those issues.

For example, if your cat isn't seeing well, make a sound as you enter or leave a room so you don't startle them. They may cry if they don't know where you are. Help them learn to find you by making sounds or wearing a bell to guide them in your direction.

You may need to adjust furniture and resource placement so your cat can move more easily to find what they need.

Changes in hearing can be helped by visually showing them when you enter or leave a room or stomping to create a soft vibration. If your cat gets nervous when they can’t see you, help them learn to come looking for you by poking your head around the corner to get their attention and then letting them come to you.
